Happy Easter!

The season of Easter follows Lent. Easter is the season of joy, hope and new life when we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus, God raising Jesus to new life. Easter is the greatest season of the Church’s year.

It is a time when we remember and listen to stories from Scripture, about the disciples’ experiences of the risen Jesus. Easter is a time when we remember that Jesus is always with us.

Charles Blackman

During Visual Arts we have been inspired by Charles Blackman. He was born in 1928 in Sydney and he is famous for his Schoolgirl series which depict many school buildings.

First, we looked at images of different schools and selected the one we liked best. Then we sketched the school using pencil on a large piece of paper from observation and painted it. Miss Azzopardi also took a photo of us which we cut out and added to our painting.

Lent is an important season in the Church’s year. Lent is the forty days before Easter. It begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday. It is a time to grow, change and be more like Christ. During Lent, we prepare for the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday.

Prayer increases our love for God. During Lent we want to get to know Jesus better by talking to Him and listening to Him. We want to remember His love for us, so we think about all He did for us.

Lent is a good time to fast, just as Jesus fasted in the desert for forty days. When we fast, God s able to fill us up with the Holy Spirit and make us more like Jesus. Fasting strengthens our will by saying ‘no’ to things we want. This helps us when we are faced with temptation to be able to say ‘no’ to those things that are sinful and can harm our relationship with God.

Almsgiving is also a part of our journey toward Jesus during Lent. It means sharing what we have with others or doing charitable deeds. Almsgiving helps us to focus on others more.

Statements of Position

The students have continued to work really hard to write a persuasive statement of position. 

We have been learning that when writing a statement of position, we need to:

  • State the topic.
  • State our opinion.
  • Use high modality words and language of opinion.
  • State three arguments in one sentence.
  • Ask a rhetorical question.

It is important to include a rhetorical question in order to persuade the reader to agree with your opinion.

Rhetorical question starters include the following.

  • How could you (we) possibly..?
  • Do you really think…?
  • What would happen if…?
  • Could your conscience cope with..?
  • Is it really worth..?
  • Do you want to be part of..?

Listen and watch some students present their statements of position.

The students in Five White have been learning about the different types of angles.

Acute Angle: an angle that is less than 90°

Right Angle: an angle that is exactly 90°

Obtuse Angle: an angle that is greater than 90° but less than 180°

Straight Angle: an angle that is exactly 180°

Reflex Angle: an angle that is greater than 180° and less than 360°

Revolution: a 360° angle, a full rotation, a complete turn so it points back the same way

2D Space

The students in Five White are learning about two-dimensional space. So far we have learnt about the different types of triangles, quadrilaterals and irregular and regular polygons.


  • Right-angled triangles have one right angle of 90°. 
  • Isosceles triangles have two equal sides and two equal angles. 
  • Equilateral triangles have three equal sides and three equal angles. 
  • Scalene triangles have three sides that are all different lengths.


Quadrilateral means ‘four sides’, therefore any four sided shape is a quadrilateral.

  • A rectangle is a four sided shape where every angle is a right angle and opposite sides are parallel and of equal length.
  • A rhombus is a four sided shape where all sides have equal length, opposite sides are parallel and opposite angles are equal.
  • A square is a four sided shape that has four equal sides, every angle is 90° and all opposite sides are parallel. 
  • A parallelogram is a four sided shape with all sides parallel and equal in length and opposite angles are equal. 


A polygon is a plane shape (flat shape) with three or more straight sides. E.g. a triangle, hexagon and pentagon.

Regular polygons have equal sides and angles.

RegularIrregular polygons do not have sides that are all equal in length and/or at least one angle is different in size from the other angles.  

Irregular Polygons

The students used the ‘Show Me’ app, cards and computers to practise drawing and explaining the different triangles, quadrilaterals, irregular and regular polygons. Take a look at the videos and the slideshow below.

Sports Carnival

St. Felix Primary School held their annual sports carnival on Wednesday 13th March. The whole school had a lot of fun as they cheered for their house colour and participated in many sporting events. The events included the following.

  • Hurdles
  • Bean Bag Throw
  • Ball Games (captain ball, under and over and tunnel ball)
  • Long Jump
  • Javelin
  • Novelties (egg and spoon race, sack race)
  • Relays

The students in Five White showed great sportsmanship as they tried their best, encouraged other students and participated in every event. Congratulations to the winners of the 2013 sports carnival, blue! Better luck next year red, yellow and green!

Statements of Position

Five White are learning how to write an exposition. The purpose of an exposition is to persuade the reader to agree with the author.

There are three main parts in an exposition.

  • Statement of position
  • A series of arguments with supporting evidence
  • A conclusion

The students have been working really hard to write a persuasive statement of position. A statement of position requires the following.

  • High modality words
  • Language of opinion
  • The topic
  • The author’s opinion
  • Three strong arguments in one sentence
  • A rhetorical question 

Here are some great examples of persuasive statements of position from students in Five White.

I absoloutely believe that children under 11 should not use the internet. It is thought that children don’t often act responsibly on the internet, children will click on spam images which will lead to the computer being infected by a virus and children are likely to be cyber bullied which can lead to feelings of anxiety, anger and sadness. Would you like your child to be sad? – Nathan

I strongly believe that watching  a movie is better than reading a book. From my experience, watching a movie is better than reading a book as the audience can see it and not have to imagine it, the audience will find it more interesting and entertaining. Would you like to watch a movie rather than read a book? – Anthony

I strongly believe that children should wear a school hat. It is true to say that hats protect children from getting sun burnt, protect you from skin cancer and getting a headache. Do you want your children to have skin cancer? – Phillip

I absoloutely believe that all children should participate in a sport. You can’t doubt that if children participate in a sport, they will be more social, more fit and it will give them cooperative skills. Do you want your children to be fit and happy? – Andrea

I absoloutely believe that watching a movie isn’t better than reading a book. It is fair to say that watching a movie isn’t better than reading a book because it uses your imagination, it helps you expand your vocabulary and you can become a better reader. Would you like to train your skills of imagination, expand your vocabulary and become a better reader? – Natalie

Column Graphs

The students in Five White have been learning about the topic ‘data‘ in Mathematics. They have been learning all about how to construct and interpret column graphs, picture graphs and pie graphs. Column graphs need to have the following.

  • Title
  • X axis (horizontal line)
  • Y axis  (vertical line)
  • X axis label (e.g. Sports)
  • Y axis label (e.g. Number of students)
  • X axis values (e.g. basketball, netball, soccer…)
  • Y axis values  (numbers with zero beginning in the corner)
  • Columns (equal spaces in between each column)
  • A key if necessary

The students participated in different activities, including: using the ‘Show Me’ app on the iPads and constructing column graphs on poster paper, in their mathematics books or on a website.  Take a look at our wonderful work

Interpreting Data

The students in Five White have been learning about data and how to interpret dataData is information, so interpreting data means finding out what the information is telling us. Data is sometimes shown in tables, graphs and charts to make the information easier to read. It is important to read all the different parts of the graph, table or chart.

Take a look at the column graph below and leave a comment with sentences interpreting the data.

Here are some questions to get you started.

  • What brand of chocolate is the most popular?
  • What brand of chocolate is the least popular?
  • Which brands of chocolate are more popular than Dairy Milk?
  • Which brands of chocolate are less popular than Twirl?
  • How many Crunchie and Snickers chocolate bars were purchased altogether?
