2D Space

The students in Five White are learning about two-dimensional space. So far we have learnt about the different types of triangles, quadrilaterals and irregular and regular polygons.

Triangles

  • Right-angled triangles have one right angle of 90°.
  • Isosceles triangles have two equal sides and two equal angles.
  • Equilateral triangles have three equal sides and three equal angles.
  • Scalene triangles have three sides that are all different lengths.

Triangles

Quadrilateral means ‘four sides’, therefore any four sided shape is a quadrilateral.

  • A rectangle is a four sided shape where every angle is a right angle and opposite sides are parallel and of equal length.
  • A rhombus is a four sided shape where all sides have equal length, opposite sides are parallel and opposite angles are equal.
  • A square is a four sided shape that has four equal sides, every angle is 90° and all opposite sides are parallel.
  • A parallelogram is a four sided shape with all sides parallel and equal in length and opposite angles are equal.

Quadrilateral

A polygon is a plane shape (flat shape) with three or more straight sides. E.g. a triangle, hexagon and pentagon.

Regular polygons have equal sides and angles.

RegularIrregular polygons do not have sides that are all equal in length and/or at least one angle is different in size from the other angles.

Irregular Polygons

The students used the ‘Show Me’ app, cards and computers to practise drawing and explaining the different triangles, quadrilaterals, irregular and regular polygons. Take a look at the videos and the slideshow below.

Log into Studyladder and complete the triangle activities.

Click here, here and here for links to videos about triangles and polygons.

Leave a ‘what am I?’ comment for someone to answer about a triangle, quadrilateral, irregular or regular polygon.

E.g. What am I? I have three sides and they are all different lengths.

  1. Dear Five White & Miss Azzopardi,

Awesome videos! All those videos helped me learn more about 2D shapes. Here is my ”what am I?” question : I have 3 sides that have equal sides and angles.

    Thanks,
    Cecilia 🙂

Dear 5 White & Miss Azzopardi,

To be honest for the pre test about shapes i did not get one bit. Now im starting to get it! Here is my quesstion to you:
    What am I?
    -all my sides are equal
-my opposite sides are parallel to each other
    -i have 4 sides
-unlike a square the sides are NOT 90 degree angles
    What am I?
Can you guess what shape I am?

    Regards,
    Andrea

  3. Dear Andrea,

    Is your shape a Rhombus?
In class I saw you working so hard! Hope you can keep up the great work!

    See you Tomorrow!
    Cecilia

Dear Five White and Miss Azzopardi,

I have to agree with Andrea I didn`t get one bit of the pre-test but now that I have learnt much more about triangles, quadrilateral and polygons I think I will do much better in the post-test than the pre-test. This is my who am I- I have two straight sides and two equal angles and I am not a polygon or a quadrilateral. Who am I?

    Sincerly Anthony

  5. Dear Andrea,

I agree the videos and picture were amazings.I learnt many things about triangles, regular and irregular shapes.

    King regards,

    James

Dear five white and miss Azzopardi,

those videos helped me heaps! I know that five white have been trying really hard so I am sure they will do good in the test.
    WHO AM I ???
    – I am a quadrilateral
    – I have 4 sides and angles
    – I have a 90 degree angle
    – I am NOT a polygon
    – I am a ____________

    See you tomorrow,
    Angel 🙂 😀

    Dear 5W and Miss Azzopardi,

I think I have learnt many things and I know so much now.
    Who Am I??
-I have 2 sides that are equal lengths
-the other side is a different length
    What Am I??

    Kind regards,
    Jennifer.A

Dear Miss Azzopardi and five white,

What am i? i have four sides and they are all equal?

    Kind regards

  9. Natalie

    Dear 5W and Miss Azzopardi,
I have learnt a lot about 2D Space. Using the knowledge I used for 2D space I came up with one what am i question:
    -I am an irregular quadrilateral
    -I have one right angle
-I am shaped like an L
    What am I???

    Sincerely,
    Natalie

    Dear: Five White and Miss.Azzopardi,

I have learnt a lot during maths. Here is a Who Am I?
    Who Am I?
    -I have 4 equal sides
    -My angles are all equal
    -I am a regular shape
    -I am a quadrilateral shape
    Who Am I?

    Kind regards,
    Alicia

Dear Five White And Miss Azzopardi,

To be honest with you when we first started 2D space I didn’t know much about it. But ever since miss Azzopardi started teaching us i have learnt a lot. Watch:
    *I am a Quadalatriel
    *I Have Four sides
*I was a square but I got hit by a bus
    *I have four equal sides
    *Opposite sides are Parallel
    WHO AM I???

    Kind Regards,
    Isabella.N 🙂 🙂 🙂

    Dear Five White,

I have been enjoying leaning about 2d space a lot. i have learnt about polygons, quadrilaterals, circles, triangles and more. I have 3 sides and one angle that is 90 degrees, what am i ?

    Yours truly,
    Bella

  14. Dear 5w and Miss Azzopardi,

this maths session is worth it to be honest last year i did not get one bit by now i know how to draw them the rap Bella and Grace made was awesome
i’d love to see more raps on this!!
What am i? i have 2 sides that are equal and one side different

    Thanks for reading,
    Josephine:)

    • Cecilia

      Dear Josephine,

I Agree that Bella and Grace’s rap was the best, But are you a Isosceles Triangle?

      Bye!
      Cecilia
