Nude Food Friday

St Felix had their very first waste free lunch day on World Environment Day, 5th June 2013. The playground was so much cleaner and the students learnt about the importance of having less waste.  As it was such a hit, we will be having a waste free lunch day each Friday and it will be called Nude Food Friday.

You need to ensure that you do the following.

  • Bring fruit without packaging.
  • Use a reusable lunch bag/box for carrying your lunch.
  • Use refillable bottles for drinks.
  • Your sandwiches, muffins etc must be in plastic containers instead of glad wrap or plastic bags.

Did you know that for every wheelie bin we fill at school and home there are another 70 wheelie bins full of waste that we never see? All of that waste needs to go somewhere and it doesn’t just magically disappear. It is taken to landfill site and most of the waste takes a very long time to decompose (breakdown and return to the soil). Click here and here for more information about waste.

How will you help to reduce waste at school and at home?

Click on one of the links above and share a fact that you found interesting.

  1. Dear Five White and Miss Azzopardi,

    I would reduce at school by using containers instead of plastic bags.

    Sincerely,
    Cecilia

      Dear Cecilia,
      I am going to try that as well because lots of birds are dyeing because of our waste.
      Kind regards,
      Grace

    Dear 5W and Miss Azzopardi,
    I would help reduce rubbish at home and at school by using some reuseble items and I would try to use containers. This is what I learnt about waste:When we dump rubbish at the tip (landfill) polluting greenhouse gases (methane) are released. This happens when food and green waste rots under mountains of other rubbish. This puts more energy into our atmosphere and is starting to affect our climate.

    Sincerely,
    Natalie

    Dear Five White and Miss Azzopardi,

    I think ” Nude Food Friday ” is a good idea because it reduces the amount of rubbish that is just left carelessly on the playground and it makes our playground more cleaner. I think every school should have this idea because it reduces the chance of birds coming and eating and it reduces birds and animals dieing from Plastic.

    Kind regards,
    Tony

  4. Dear Five White and Miss Azzopardi,

    An interesting fact I’ve learnt is that it takes 200-500 years for a beer can to be decomposed! It was very interesting 😉

    Yours Truly,
    Cecilia

      Dear Cecilia,

      I can’t believe that it takes 200-500 years to decompose just on beer can or bottle!

      Bye,
      Josephine

  5. Dear Five White,

    This is a very interesting post. I will help to reduce waste at home by always putting recycling in the recycling bin, paper, cardboard anything reusable. i will also reduce waste by making use of rubbish. Like the saying go’s another person’s trash is another person’s treasure. My fact that I found out was when we dump rubbish at the tip or landfill polluting greenhouse gases methane are released. This happens when food and green waste rots under mountains of other rubbish. This puts more energy into our atmosphere and is starting to affect our climate. I am very astonished by what this has told me because I never knew this before, I hope I can start doing extra to help save our environment. How do you recycle?

    Sincerely,
    Bella

    • Josephine

      Dear Bella,

      It is good way to put rubbish in the right bin like recycling in the recycling and so on .
      How i recycle is by to decrease the rubbish i put in the bin

      Kind regards,
      Josephine

      • Grace

        Dear Bella,
        It is good to put rubbish in the right bin because you don’t want any birds dyeing or having reusable things in a rubbish bin which will go to the rubbish dump.

        Kind regards,
        Grace

    Dear Five White and Miss Azzopardi,

    Nude food Friday is a great idea because the landfill has reduces and not much rubbish is left to decompose. i will help reducing wrappers food by bringing a container not zip lock bags or sandwich bags because it takes 10 to 20 years to decompose and putting all your rubbish in your lunch box or just bring a container.
    My interesting facts that i found on the links are:
    -Styrofoam and glass jars can NEVER be decomposed and the rest takes months and up to 500 years
    – the triangles on rubbish means reduce reuse and recycle
    – that every year our family reduce’s rubbish up to three bedrooms!
    – that the stickers on our mail box (no junk mail) actually reduce the amount of paper being wasted
    – animals in the sea might die because plastic bags can suffocate them
    Do you think people will listen to bring containers to school or they just bring plastic wrapping sandwich wrapping instead?

    Sincerely,
    Josephine

  7. James

    Dear five white and Miss Azzopardi,
    i believe that nude food friday is a good idea because it reduce the most rubish and it is helping our earth be ‘green’.

    from,
    James

    • Josephine

      Dear James,

      Nude food is really a great idea to make our school playground clean and less rubbish is decomposed!

      Kind regards,
      Josephine

  8. Grace

    Dear miss Azzopardi and 5W,

    I will help reduce rubbish at home by putting reusable things in the recycling bin and try to use containers instead of zip lock bags at school. What I found interesting was that because of all this pollution animals are dyeing such as trees, birds, fish and many more. I will try walking to school to help animals. How are you going to stop pollution?

    • Josephine

      Dear Grace,

      I am going stop pollution by composing less rubbish and use less plastic bag’s because it kills birds and animals in the ocean like seagulls because mainly plastic goes to the sea or ocean!

      Have a nice day,
      Josephine

  9. Kong

    Dear Miss Azzopardi and 5 White,

    How will I help reduce rubbish at school by using containers to put the rubbish in, instead of putting the rubbish in the bin, which then we have more rubbish in the dump.

    Kind Regards,
    Kong

  10. Anthony

    Dear Five White and Miss Azzopardi,

    I think that Nude Food Friday is a good idea. Instead of bringing rapping’s and peals, bring plastic containers. Do you want our world to be a rubbish dump?

    Sincerely
    Anthony

    • Tony

      Dear Anthony,

      It would be a disgrace if our world was a dump because that means people are not taking care of Gods creation and animals can die for plastic bags.Also if the plastic bags go on animal faces they can suffer-cat and die. Also it would also be the governments fault that they have not taking responsibility in the areas.

      Yours Truely,
      Tony.

  11. Dear 5W & Miss Azzopardi,

    We can turn the lights of when were not using at home and at school we could help grow plants.

    Sincerely,
    Andrea

  12. Hass/Jennifer.A's Dad

    Dear 5W and Miss Azzopardi,

    I think that NUDE FOOD FRIDAY is a very good idea at school because the playground will be a cleaner enviournment and the children will learn a lesson to not throw food everywhere!
    You can reduce waste by recycling and reusing items.
    Have a look at how long the ‘rubbish’ on the list below will be around for before it has fully de- composed:
    * Orange Peel – 6 months
    * Cigarette Butt – 10-12 years
    * Disposable nappy – 75 years
    * Beer can – 200-500 years
    * Glass bottles and jars – Never
    *Paper – 2.5 months
    * Milk Carton – 5 years
    * Plastic bag – 10-20 years * Tin can – 100 years
    * Stryofoam – Never
    I can’t believe that some items never de- compose…
    What do you think about NUDE FOOD FRIDAY?

    Kind regards,
    Hass
