On Wednesday 27th November, year four and five went to LaSalle for a Science lesson with Mr Crook. The students learnt how to safely light a bunsen burner and then they conducted an experiment to observe the colour of the flame when it interacted with different chemicals.

Hi Y4&5! It was an absolute pleasure and honour to teach you some Science. I was very impressed with how you listened to instructions, followed safety procedures, learnt how to light a Bunsen burner, performed flame test experiments and recorded everything on iPads.

Science at LasSalle was AWESOME!!! My favourite part of the lesson was putting the chemicals on the fire to make different coloured flames.You need to remember to strike the match away from you, cover the air holes on the collar, wash your hands if you touched the chemical and to always put your safety goggles on. The tools/equipment we used were:
* tweesers
* safety goggles
* Bunsen burner
I was surprised when the flames changed colour and one of the chemicals was green and orange 🙂

Something I enjoyed was watching the flame change colour. You need to remember to keep the air holes closed because if its open the flame is hotter and invisible and if its invisible you can’t see it so you can get hurt easily.. The tools and equipment we used was tongs to hold the paddle pops over the Bunsen burner, a beaker and a Bunsen burner. I was surprised with how the flame changed colours when we put the paddle pops soaked in chemicals that I never heard of before. The science with Mr crook was really fun. I wish I could do it again. I really enjoyed using the Bunsen burner and I found it really cool that if leave the holes opened the flame would kind of disappear and when you add a bit of chemicals to it it would change color . To safely light a Bunsen burner you must have goggles and a lab coat on . you must also have a heat proof mat that you could put hot things on. When lighting matches you must always remember to swipe the match towards the heat proof mat and away from you.

It seems like you had a great time! I also enjoyed the lesson, what I enjoyed about the lesson was also that we could change the colour of the flame, what we need to remember when using a Bunsen Burner is that we must first cover all the hole in the collar, we then turn on the gas and strike a match and light the Bunsen Burner, the flame is called a “Safety Flame” which is clearly visible, if the air holes are not covered, the flame will turn transparent, which is the most dangerous flame of all. What was your favourite flame colour?

I absolutely enjoyed learning how to light a Bunsen Burner and what rules are applied when doing it. The rules when lighting a Bunsen Burner are:
– Wear safety goggles along with a lab coat.
– Make sure you have a heat-proof mat under your Bunsen Burner.
– After you have struck the match, you can turn the gas on.
– Do not put your hand on top of the flame.
The equipment used are:
– Matches
– Paddlepop sticks
– Tongs
– Bunsen Burner
– Heat- proof mat
I was surprised that when you put the metal substance into the flame, the flame changes colour. For example:
– Sodium Chloride —–> Yellow
– Strontium Chloride —–> Red
– Lithium Chloride —–> Red
– Calcium Chloride —–> Orange

Doing Science at LaSalle was the best learning experience in my life. i learnt about how to use materials and i got to learn new chemicals that was on the paddle pop stick. We all wore lab coats and protective glasses and we were all mini scientist. The materials we used were:
-bunsen burner
-matches
-goggles
-paddle pop stick with chemicals on it
-tongs
The best part of the lesson was when we lit the matches up and we put paddle pop sticks on the flame to see the flames change colour.

It was so fun going to LaSalle to learn how to light and use a Bunsen burner. We used different chemicals to change the flame colour of the Bunsen burner. To safely light a Bunsen burner you need to get safety glasses, get a heat proof mat and put your blown out match on the heat proof mat. What did you enjoy about lighting a Bunsen burner?

Wow I’ve learnt so much at science in La Salle with Mr crook.
i learnt what i Bunsen burner is and how it works and when you put different kinds of chemicals on the Bunsen burner it changes the flames color!
When you want to light up a Bunsen burner you must light the match towards the heat proof mat.
At science we used so much equipment’s which were:
Matches
Heatproof mat
Paddle pop sticks
Tongs
Bunsen Burner
The thing that surprised me the most is when we put different kinds of chemicals on the Bunsen burner and the flames change into different colors
and i was amazed!
