  2. Hi Y4&5! It was an absolute pleasure and honour to teach you some Science. I was very impressed with how you listened to instructions, followed safety procedures, learnt how to light a Bunsen burner, performed flame test experiments and recorded everything on iPads.

You are all little scientists in the making. Next time you see something that interests you in nature or in the sky or a new material, find out about it – find out how it works or where it comes from, find out about the people who made the discovery, find out how you can learn more.

I’ve spoken with Ms Harbrow and we’re hopeful of arranging some more lessons next year for you guys. Go St Felix and go Science!!! 🙂

    • Dear Simon Crook,

You taught us a lot about Bunsen burners. You really made learning fun! I hope we could do it again next year 🙂

      Sincerely,
      Andrea

  4. Tony

Dear Five White and Miss Azzopadi,

At La Salle Science was so fun especially when we were making the flames change colour because it was so cool and the process of making fire was fun too. My lab coat was so big on me that I had to change it and I think the lab coats were big on everyone. What was your favourite part of the Science Lesson?

    Sincerely,
    Tony

    • Anthony

      Dear Tony,

Science was very fun at LaSalle when we were making the flames change colour as we used a few different types of chemicals. My favorite part of the science lesson was probably lighting the Bunsen burner and making the flames change colour. What was your favorite part of the science lesson?

      Sincerely Anthony

  5. Dear Five White and Miss Azzopardi,

Science at LasSalle was AWESOME!!! My favourite part of the lesson was putting the chemicals on the fire to make different coloured flames. You need to remember to strike the match away from you, cover the air holes on the collar, wash your hands if you touched the chemical and to always put your safety goggles on. The tools/equipment we used were:

    * tweesers
    * safety goggles
    * Bunsen burner

I was surprised when the flames changed colour and one of the chemicals was green and orange 🙂

    Sincerely,
    Cecilia

    • Natalie

      Dear Cecilia,
I absolutely loved working with you during the experiment! We had lots of fun and I hope that their will be another experiment to do next year.

      Kind regards,
      Natalie

      • Cecilia

        Dear Natalie,

It was really cool seeing everyone having a turn at light the Bunsen burner. I definitely want to do it again next year 🙂

        Yours Truly,
        Cecilia

  6. Brenda

Dear Five White and Miss Azzopardi,

Something I enjoyed was watching the flame change colour. You need to remember to keep the air holes closed because if its open the flame is hotter and invisible and if its invisible you can’t see it so you can get hurt easily.. The tools and equipment we used was tongs to hold the paddle pops over the Bunsen burner, a beaker and a Bunsen burner. I was surprised with how the flame changed colours when we put the paddle pops soaked in chemicals that I never heard of before. The science with Mr crook was really fun. I wish I could do it again. Did you enjoy it Miss Azzopardi?

    Sincerely,
    Brenda

  7. Jamie

    Dear Mr Crook,

It was so fun with you at science!!!!!!!!! I’ve learnt so much new things like how to light a Bunsen burner, how to use it, and different types of names and colors that you organised for us on the paddle pop sticks. Hope to see you next year.

    Kind regards,
    Jamie:)

    • Natalie

      Dear Jamie,
I definitely agree that I had lots of fun during the time with Mr Crook! I found it interesting how the flame changed colour when you added a metal substance that is on a paddlepop stick. I hope we could do another experiment next year!

      Sincerely,
      Natalie

    • Bella

      Dear Jamie,

I know it was really fun!! I learnt how to light a bunsen burner and use different chemicals to make different colours. I really hope we do it again next year, it was to fun!

      Sincerely,
      Bella

  8. Dear Five White and Miss Azzopardi,

Science was a blast. I never knew that different types of chemical can change colour when you put it in fire.

    Sincerely,
    James

  9. Grace

    Dear miss Azzopardi and 5W,

I really enjoyed using the Bunsen burner and I found it really cool that if leave the holes opened the flame would kind of disappear and when you add a bit of chemicals to it it would change color . To safely light a Bunsen burner you must have goggles and a lab coat on . you must also have a heat proof mat that you could put hot things on. When lighting matches you must always remember to swipe the match towards the heat proof mat and away from you.

    • Natalie

      Dear Grace,
I absolutely enjoyed learning how to light a Bunsen Burner and how the flame changed colour when a chemical substance was added. I can see that you have learnt lots!!! Keep up the good work!!!

      Sincerely,
      Natalie

Congratulations Years 4 and 5 on what looks like an ‘enlightening’ learning experience! It’s great to see rich sharing of resources and true alignment between primary, secondary and adviser services. Well done to all of you.

  11. Kong

Dear 5 White and Miss Azzopardi,

What i enjoyed about the lesson was when we put the paddle pop stick in the flame which made the colour turn into a different colour. The equipment we needed were a bunsen burner, a match, paddle pop stick with chemicals and gas.

    Sincerely,
    Kong

    • Dear Kong,

It seems like you had a great time! I also enjoyed the lesson, what I enjoyed about the lesson was also that we could change the colour of the flame, what we need to remember when using a Bunsen Burner is that we must first cover all the hole in the collar, we then turn on the gas and strike a match and light the Bunsen Burner, the flame is called a “Safety Flame” which is clearly visible, if the air holes are not covered, the flame will turn transparent, which is the most dangerous flame of all. What was your favourite flame colour?

      Most Sincerly,
      Nathan

  12. Dear Miss Azzopardi and five white,

I loved lighting Bunsen burner!!!!! What I learnt about the lesson was different chemicals make the flame different colours. What I remember safety wise was always have your goggles on. The tools I used was
    -tongs
    -match box
    -Bunsen burner
    -lab coat
    -goggles
What surprise me was how you light the Bunsen burner and there was steps to make the flame a different colour.

    • Natalie

      Dear Jennifer E,
I ENJOYED DOING THE EXPERIMENT SO MUCH! What I learnt is that the flame above the Bunsen Burner can change colour once a chemical is added.

      Sincerely,
      Natalie

    • Alicia

      Dear Jennifer E,

WOW! Reading the part of the different chemicals that make different flame colour. Made me wish that I was there. Well hopefully we have another lesson next year.

      Kind regards,
      Alicia

    • Grace

      Dear Jennifer E,

I can see you had a lot of fun lighting the Bunsen burner. I found it really cool that of you add chemicals it would change colour. You sure have a great memory. If you could add one more thing to make it even more safer what would it be?

      Kind regards,
      Grace

  13. Dear 5W and Miss Azzopardi,
I absolutely enjoyed learning how to light a Bunsen Burner and what rules are applied when doing it. The rules when lighting a Bunsen Burner are:
    – Wear safety goggles along with a lab coat.
    – Make sure you have a heat-proof mat under your Bunsen Burner.
    – After you have struck the match, you can turn the gas on.
    – Do not put your hand on top of the flame.

    The equipment used are:
    – Matches
    – Paddlepop sticks
    – Tongs
    – Bunsen Burner
    – Heat- proof mat

I was surprised that when you put the metal substance into the flame, the flame changes colour. For example:
    – Sodium Chloride —–> Yellow
    – Strontium Chloride —–> Red
    – Lithium Chloride —–> Red
    – Calcium Chloride —–> Orange
    – Cupric Chloride —–> Blue
    – Cupric Sulfate ——> Green
    What did you learn?

    Sincerely,
    Natalie

    • Amy

      Dear Natalie,

Wow I can’t believe that you remembered all that information. It looked like you had a fun time.

      Kind regards,
      Amy

  14. Kevin

Dear Five White and miss Azzopardi,

Doing Science at LaSalle was the best learning experience in my life. i learnt about how to use materials and i got to learn new chemicals that was on the paddle pop stick. We all wore lab coats and protective glasses and we were all mini scientist. The materials we used were:
    -bunsen burner
    -matches
    -goggles
-paddle pop stick with chemicals on it
    -tongs

The best part of the lesson was when we lit the matches up and we put paddle pop sticks on the flame to see the flames change colour.

    Sincerely,
    Kevin

  15. Jamie

    Dear Natalie,

I loved lighting the Bunsen burner too!!!!! I learnt the rules too, they weren’t actually that hard ay.

    Kind regards,
    Jamie:)

  16. Amy

Dear Five white and Miss Azzopardi,

WOW those pics look like you had a fun time.what did you do? was it fun?

    Kind regards,
    Amy

  17. Anthony

Dear Five White and Miss Azzopardi,

It was so fun going to LaSalle to learn how to light and use a Bunsen burner. We used different chemicals to change the flame colour of the Bunsen burner. To safely light a Bunsen burner you need to get safety glasses, get a heat proof mat and put your blown out match on the heat proof mat. What did you enjoy about lighting a Bunsen burner?

    Sincerely Anthony

  18. Simone

    Dear Mr crook,

It was really fun because we done the fire and the colours were blue, purple, green, yellow and red the colours were so colourful

    Kind regards,
    Simone

  19. Dear Five White and Miss Azzopardi,

Wow I’ve learnt so much at science in La Salle with Mr crook.
i learnt what i Bunsen burner is and how it works and when you put different kinds of chemicals on the Bunsen burner it changes the flames color!
When you want to light up a Bunsen burner you must light the match towards the heat proof mat.
At science we used so much equipment’s which were:
    Matches
    Heatproof mat
    Paddle pop sticks
    Tongs
    Bunsen Burner
The thing that surprised me the most is when we put different kinds of chemicals on the Bunsen burner and the flames change into different colors
    and i was amazed!
What did you learn at La Salle with Mr Crook?

    Sincerely,
    Josephine
