Just Like You! Part Two

On Monday 19th August, years five and six enjoyed part two of the Disability Awareness Program led by Erica and Natalie from the Cerebral Palsy Alliance. Take a look at what we learnt below.

There are different kinds of disabilities, including the following.

  • Physical disabilities: Many different sorts of permanent conditions which result in part of a person’s body not functioning as it should. E.g. Amputation
  • Disabilities that you can’t see: You cannot see some disabilities. Sometimes they can be difficult to understand because you do not know that the person has a disability. E.g. Autism and hearing impairment.
  • Sensory disabilities: Sensory disability refers to a range of impairments to a person’s senses such as sight, hearing and sometimes even touch or smell. E.g. Blindness
  • Some disabilities can fit into more than one category.
  • We also learnt about paraplegia and quadriplegia. These terms refer to a person’s ability to move a particular part of the body as they are paralysed. Paraplegia is paralysis of both legs or both arms. Quadriplegia is paralysis of both legs and both arms.
  • People with a disability communicate in many different ways. For example, a person who is blind or who has a vision impairment may use braille, while a person with a hearing impairment may use Auslan (Australian Sign Language).

Remember, a disability is not a disease. We shouldn’t describe people as a ‘disabled person’ or a ‘disability boy/girl’. Always describe them as a person with a disability.

Take a look at the YouTube clip below for some great tips regarding how to treat people with a disability.

Take a look at the YouTube clip below. Show it to someone in your family. Encourage them to leave a comment about what they felt when they watched it. How do you feel when you watch the YouTube clip?

Dear Five White and Miss Azzopardi,

I learnt that Cerebral Palsy is an organisation that supports, helps and encourages children, teenagers and adults with Cerebral Palsy.

    Yours Truly,
    Cecilia

    • Dear Cecilia,
WOW! You just learnt something big! I learnt that guide dogs help people who are blind. They help them find their way on a street, shopping centre etc. Thanks to guide dogs blind people are able to do the things that we can do.

      Sincerely,
      Natalie

  2. Amy

    Dear Five White,

i love learning about cerebral palsy now i understand what cp means and what it is.

    Kind regards,
    Amy

    • Dear Amy,
Same! Before I didn’t know what CP stands for. Also watching the video clips made me realise how happy a person is when they achieve something, that seems like nothing to us. I learnt that we shouldn’t take things for granted.

      Sincerely,
      Natalie

Dear Five White and Miss Azzopardi,

I really loved learning about CP. It was a great experience and Erica and Natalie taught me lots. I can not believe there is not a cure for CP, I really wish that one day we will find a cure and people will be happy again. Erica and Natalie are really nice people and they can do what other people can do.

    Sincerly,
    Tony

    Dear 5W and Miss Azzopardi,

I really liked the Just Like You Part 2 because I was waiting to see what else we could learn about. It was really fun to learn more about cerebral palsy and the conditions. I really wish there was a Just Like You Part 3!!!

    Sincerely,
    Jennifer.A

  8. Dera 5W and Miss Azzopardi,
Doing this program really helped me to look into things more deeply. It helped me recognise how a person feels when they achieve something or when someone visits them. Doing one of these things make them smile and laugh in joy, even though its just a simple thing. This program inspired me to become a doctor or a nurse just like my parents. They also helped me realise that small things can make people smile.

    Kind regards,
    Natalie

    • Dear Natalie,

Woah!!! It’s obviously you’ve deeply learnt more about the disability awareness program! I hope you achieve something in the future as well. Here is a poem- How can one smile such sweet smiles,
When one is so saddened by sorrows for miles,
How can I smile the same smiles,
When life brings me nothing but tears,

      I wondered for so long,
What reason you had to smile that long,
To keep smiling though troubles come,
And still remain sweet and silently overcome,

It’s such a mystery to me,
Your smiles from heaven with glee,
I adore and yet envy thee,
But I’d rather you smile those at me.

      Yours Sincerely,
      Cecilia

Dear 5 White and Miss Azzopardi,

I learnt that Cerebral Palsy is a disability that affects a few parts or only one part of a person.

    Sincerely,
    Kong

  10. Bella

    Dear Five White,

I learnt that guide dogs can help people who have lost sight(blind) and are allowed to go anywhere like airplanes, shopping centers ect and they also help them threw there daily life like the guide dogs get there own food and even prepare other peoples meals. I also learnt that Cerebral Palsy is a disability that can affect parts of the body. What else did you learn?

    Sincerely,
    Bella

    • Grace

      Dear Bella,

I also learnt that because I thought dogs were not aloud in planes because I have never heard of that before. I also learnt a lot of other things that I have never even heard of or seen before and most of the things that I know now about disabilities is from just like you.

  11. Dear 5 White and Miss Azzopardi,

I think that this is a a GREAT post explaining that we should treat everyone the same even if they have disabilities, I learnt that autism is a disability that affects a person’s understanding with the world around them and that they may have some trouble understanding with things that we find normal.

    Sincerely,
    Nathan

  12. Brenda

Dear Five White and Miss Azzopardi,

I learnt that Cerebral palsy(Cp) can have an effect differently to everyone. Not one person has the same effect then the other person. I also learnt that there is no known cure for this disability.

    Kind regards,
    Brenda

  13. Tony

Dear Five White and Miss Azzopardi,

I loved learning about CP. It was so fun and i really enjoyed the subject. I also learned that a Disability is not a disease and if we say it to someone that has a disability they will get offended and they will feel sad. Lets hope scientist find a cure for Cp !

    King regards,
    Tony

  14. Dear Miss Azzopardi and five white,

Part two was so fun I enjoyed it so much!!!! I learnt that cerebral palsy is a permanent life-long condition, but generally does not worsen over time.

    Sincerely
    Jennifer E

  15. Dear Five White and Miss Azzopardi,

I learnt that Cerebral Palsy is a disability that a lot of people have and it can effect your brain, speech pattern, walking and may take you longer to do things.

    Yours Truly,
    Isabella.N

  16. Anthony

Dear Five White and Miss Azzopardi,

I have learnt a lot of about cerebral palsy including part one an part two and that everybody is effected differently. That includes:
    – brain damage
    – autism
    – vision impairment
    – disabled toilet e.t.c
These are some of the things that I have learnt during cerebral palsy.

    Sincerely Anthony

  17. Grace

    Dear Miss Azzopardi and 5W,

I really enjoyed learning about cerebral palsy because it was really interesting to see that their are some other people in the world with disabilities that can effect lots of different parts of your body. I really liked doing all the different activities and watching all of the videos because they have taught me how to talk to a disabled person. I really wanted to have a part 3 because it was really fun and I really want to see Natalie and Erica again.

    Sincerely,
    Grace

  18. David

Dear FIve White and Ms Azzopardi,

I learnt a lot about disabiities such as amputation, brittlebone disease etc. But the main topic in part 1 was about cerebral palsy, I learnt that cerebral palsy has no known cure and it can effect people in many different ways. E.g
    – It can disable someones talking skills.
    – It can disable someone to walk.
    – It can even disable someone to walk but their talking skills are still alright.

    Sincerely,
    David

  19. Hi Everyone. 🙂 It’s Natalie from ‘Just Like You’.

I had a look at your post about Just Like you and some of the videos. It’s awesome.

I was also just reading through all your amazing comments and cannot wipe the smile of my face. You were all such an amazing class to work with. I hope you are all doing well & I’m so glad that you have learnt so much from the program and from Erica and I.

I have noticed a lot of you have said that you wish there was a part 3 to the Just Like You program. Unfortunately there isn’t. However I was just wondering if there ever was to be a part 3 What would you want it to involve? What other things would you want to learn about disabilities that we did not cover in parts 1 & 2. Is there anything we did not teach you about that you wish we would have.

Ps: There are no right or wrong answers here. I am just personally curious to know what else you would have liked to learn from us and the program, that’s all.
I look forward to hearing from you all.

    Sincerely,
    Nat.

  20. Bella

    Dear David,

I agree I learnt a lot about disabilities that I had never known before. Cerebral Palsy and many other disabilities don’t change the actual person and as a fact I know that some people treat them for what type of disability they have, so it is very important to respect them and treat them the way that we would like to be treated.

    Sincerely,
    Bella

  21. Dear Five White and Miss Azzopardi,

Learning about cp was so interesting because we have to treat people that has a disabilities and it can sometimes be hard but this taught me a lot!!
I found out that cerebral palsy is a permanent life long condition!
    what did you find out?

    Bye,
    Josephine
